How to Make Greek Yogurt Buttermilk Dip

Greek Yogurt Buttermilk Dip is reminiscent of Sour Cream and Onion dips or chips. It has an outstanding tangy fresh flavor that is quite addictive without the guilt of mainstream mixes. With this recipe you should be able to make something that is not only extremely tasty but also somewhat healthy. We do use whole milk yogurt here but it does have nutritional value, plus the buttermilk is low fat. Add some fresh chive and vitamin C and we have a snack that is much better to enjoy than the preservative-laden alternatives. And its really easy to put together!

What do I need to make this dip?

Greek Yogurt Buttermilk Dip is only 7 ingredients and 3 of those we’re certain you already have in your pantry with dried spices. The key to it’s addictive flavor is…you guessed it, some acidity. If you browse recipes here at The Cooking Love you will quickly see that chefs love adding some acidity to brighten your day. In this event we add fresh squeezed lemon to already tangy yogurt and buttermilk. In culinary speak there are different varieties of acidity and fresh citrus, vinegars, etc actually break up other acidities with “flat” or acrid tones such as yogurt naturally showcases. We use fresh chives here but you could opt for dried onion flakes in a pinch. Just make sure to allow them to rehydrate when you add them for a few minutes to develop flavor. You can also use fresh garlic finely chopped, but be careful with the amount as it can get spicy overtones quickly. Some other additions you may want to test;

  • Truffle oil, salt, or shavings
  • Other fresh herbs such as tarragon, mint, lemon balm, or basil
  • Chopped smoked salmon pieces
  • Sesame seeds or flax seeds
  • crumbled bacon
  • other piquant cheeses such as feta or goats cheeses
  • chopped red onion
  • fresh fennel
